UTC and GMT Explained

Coordinated Universal Time, abbreviated as UTC, is the common reference used to describe the same moment across different local time zones.

What is a UTC offset?

A location at UTC+01:00 is one hour ahead of UTC, while a location at UTC-05:00 is five hours behind it. Some offsets also include minutes.

UTC and local time

UTC does not move forward or backward for daylight saving time. A region's current offset can change when local daylight-saving rules apply, which is why named regional time zones are useful.

What is GMT?

GMT means Greenwich Mean Time. The term remains common in everyday language and some time-zone names, while UTC is the main international reference for timekeeping.
